Flamenco  with Maria Avila - August 28

Join Maria Avila for an exciting introduction to Flamenco!  This 2 hour workshop will explore basic flamenco footwork, arms, hands and expression in Tangos and Bulerias, with technique and a short choreography.

Maria Avila has established herself as an independent dancer, choreographer, and teacher. Recent achievements include being awarded a mentorship to study with Myriam Allard. Receiving professional development grants to study in Sevilla, Spain, as well as performing in the 2016 Coetaní Experimental Flamenco Festival in Athens, Greece. Locally she has trained at Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy, Karen Flamenco, and completed Centro Flamenco's professional two-year dance program. Maria Avila currently performs with Calle Verde, Raises y Alas and La Triana in Vancouver.

Pop'n'Lock / Hip Hop - August 19 & 20

Brendan Hardisty has been dancing for 5+ years learning various styles of hip-hop and popping. He has had the opportunity to learn from teachers such as Keone and Mari, Bopn Andre, Mega Man(AJ), Frequency, Moonrunners Crew, Wreckage Fam, Minto, Nastasha Gorrie, Monsta Pop and many more - Brendan has previously been part of the Raw Robots Animation Crew who has won a series of festivals all across Vancouver island, he also enters solo battle competitions and has made it past prelims in a couple. Brendan has previously taught with the Salt Spring Arts Academy and is excited to be teaching for us. 

This all ages workshop is an introduction for beginners to freestyling, hip-hop and popping, to learn the foundation and technique to both styles.

 

August 19th

This class will consist of a brief warm-up and learning basic routines to get the body comfortable with doing these movements  and then learning how to freestyle these routines in your own way.

 

August 20th
This second class class will be about learning footwork, basic arm movements such as tutting, toyman angles, animation type dance that includes  robotic movements along with  other hip-hop grooves to help improve your vocabulary.

19th or 20th  $30.

19th and 20th  $56.

Hip Hop & House Grooves - July 22 & 23

Join Mame Faty Lo and Aina Yasue as they share their favourite moves and grooves!


This workshop is ideal for people that are comfortable picking up choreography.   Although the movements are grounded in and inspired by all types of music, this 2-day workshop is mainly about hip hop in the body, Rhythms and combinations which include locking, popping, house, grooving and more.  Each class consists of warm up techniques to stretch, engage and isolate parts of the body, followed with grooving before teaching the choreography of the day.  The class will conclude with a free-style session where  participants are invited to enjoy the freedom and joy of dancing.  This is an energetic and fun weekend opportunity to challenge our musicality, body awareness, and creativity through dance!

Mame Faty Lo

She started dancing as a hobby at a very young age and in secondary school that she joined a crew and began choreographing. She has taught in her home country Senegal and in South Africa. Currently, she  is a student at Quest University where she also teaches hip-hop every week.

Aina Yasue

 

Aina grew up dancing on Saltspring Island dancing through GISPA, Saltspring Arts Academy,  the Imaginelle series with Naomi Jason and has also had the opportunity to train in other locations such as Vancouver (Canada), Seville (Spain), and Berlin (Germany). She has a diverse background of training including hip hop, house, contemporary, classical ballet, karate, pilates, and flamenco. Musically she has always had a special interest in rhythm and has studied various percussion instruments. She is inspired by all the above in her dance expression.
